Why it is Important to Back Up Data.

Data loss is not something that anyone wants to live with. After all, we have all become so dependent on the electronic forms of our data. And yet, despite this dependence and the fact that we are fully aware of it, we often neglect to back up data.

And thus, when the medium where our data is stored becomes damaged, we have no choice but to resort to data recovery services. It would have been better and easier if we developed the habit of backing up our data. After all, there are many options available to us to do so.

How Data Loss Can Occur

As stated above, we have become fully reliant on the electronic forms of our data. Our photo albums are now stored as jpeg files in folders contained within our hard drives. The same applies to our music, videos and books. The documents that we consider important, such as our personal diaries, our emails, our schoolwork and our office work are also kept in computer hard drives instead of in manila folders or binders.

Few of us realize that without ample safeguards, electronic data are vulnerable. They can be hacked and stolen. A virus or any bit of malicious code can wiggle its way into a computer and destroy the system. A sudden power surge can fry your computer’s wirings and burn your hard drive.

There are dozens of ways that you can experience data loss, and they can take you by surprise. Thus, it is important for you to make it a habit to back up data.

Options to Back Up Data

There is actually only one option that will prevent you from experiencing data loss in the event that your hard drive crashes. That is to create duplicate copies of your data on other mediums.

You can use a lot of mediums for this purpose. Here are the most common mediums used for storing data.

1. Floppy disks. Floppy disks are relics from the ancient days of the computer. They are very much limited in that the storage space they offer is quite small and they are also vulnerable to security issues. Still, they offer backup solutions in a pinch.

2. CDs. CDs are the most favored mediums when it comes to data storage. They are cheap and convenient, since they make file sharing easy and simple.

3. DVDs. DVDs are perfect for storing large files that cannot be burned on CDs such as PowerPoint presentations and high definition videos. They are just as convenient as CDs except that they last longer and offer bigger space.

4. Flash drives. Flash drives, also known as USB drives, thumb drives, pen drives or memory sticks are an emerging favorite when it comes to data storage. They are small and convenient, but often have very large storage capacities. They are also cheap and easy to carry around.

5. External hard drives. External hard drives are another great solution to turn to in order to back up data. You can put in them loads upon loads of files, and they come in varying storage capacities.

6. Offline and online storage spaces. You can also store your data in virtual spaces that are offered by professional service companies. For a fee, you can get them to keep your sensitive data, although some of them offer their services for free.

7. Printouts and tapes. An old-fashioned and sometimes wasteful way to back up data, printouts and tapes are nonetheless reliable. Many of us still believe that putting things on paper is still the best way to keep data.

There are many ways that you can turn to in order to back up data. You should make a habit of making duplicate copies of data so you would not have to turn to data recovery experts in the event of data loss.
